El nombre de Meshuggah proviene de la palabra "loco" en Yiddish.

Meshuggah se formó en Umeå en el año 1987; dos años después la banda publicaba se primer EP titulado igual que el grupo. El estilo en este EP era Thrash metal puro, similar a los trabajos que por esa época publicaba Metallica. Lo que hizo a la banda única fue, sin embargo, los elementos complejos que introducían en su música, los cuales el grupo desarrollaría más tarde. A medida que el grupo ha ido progresando, también lo han hecho su técnica y su composición, haciendo cada vez una música más extrema
